Born in Saitama, Japan, Shohei Takasaki lived in both Japan and Portland before settling in Sydney, Australia where he now lives and works. Utilizing a diverse range of artistic mediums, from oil pastels and charcoal to paint, found objects, and fabric, Takasaki frequently explores a singular subject or motif through various styles. This approach serves to emphasize the intriguing 'in-between' spaces that emerge from these artistic juxtapositions, such as self/other, domestic/foreign, internal/external, native/foreign languages, physical/virtual realms, past/future, and life/death. Takasaki's paintings are characterized by their bold strokes and vibrant colors, resembling fragments of memories that overlap and intersect. In his early works, he painted with a sense of intuition and introspection, preceding any attempts to verbalize the imagery and its underlying meanings. Through his artwork, Takasaki delves into themes that challenge established boundaries and invites viewers to reevaluate their assumptions, fostering a more nuanced and 'in-between' understanding of the world. Takasaki's artistic contributions have graced exhibitions in prominent locations, including Los Angeles, Portland, Kuwait, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Tokyo. Notably, his work has found a place in the public collections of esteemed institutions, such as the Starbucks headquarters in Seattle and The Hoxton Hotel in Portland.
