- Anne Wilkes Tucker,
(2013)、《The Transmission of Flower of Acting Style》,Galerie Priska Pasquer,科隆,德國 (2013)等。須田的作品受世界各地重要藝術機構典藏,包括東京都寫真美術館(Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo)、舊金山現代藝術博物館(San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)、休士頓美術館(Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)、歐洲攝影藝術館( Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, Paris)等。
"The epitome of Japanese photography."
- Anne Wilkes Tucker, American photography curator
Photographer Suda Issei (1940-2019) occupies a unique and significant position in the domain of Japanese photography. Born in Tokyo, he immersed himself in a cultural milieu steeped in film and literature from a young age, and these artistic influences left an indelible mark on his work. The majority of his photographs were captured during his travels, often employing flash even in broad daylight, resulting in the creation of a surreal and fantastical atmosphere. Suda primarily showcased his work in magazines and seldom published photography books. His reclusive approach to his craft kept him relatively obscure compared to his contemporaries. Nevertheless, his photography was characterized by a meticulous attention to detail, reflecting an introspective, pure, and thought-provoking style. His body of work skillfully blurred the lines between reality and imagination through astute observation. Suda's lens masterfully captured the fleeting moments of Japanese traditional culture in the face of rapid Westernization, encompassing festivals, Noh theater, music, dance, and more. Through his photographic artistry, he presented a Japan that felt familiar yet subtly enigmatic to its own people, accentuating the nuances of an ever-evolving world. Suda’s selected solo exhibitions include “Childhood Days,” Akio Nagasawa Gallery, Tokyo (2018); “Taipei Kissyo,” aura gallery (now Each Modern), Taipei (2016); “nagi no hira-fragments of calm,” Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo (2013); “The Transmission of Flower of Acting Style,” Galerie Priska Pasquer, Cologne, Germany (2013). Suda’s works is collected by prestigious art institutions around the world, including Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, Paris.
