林亦軒 Lin YiHsuan Taiwan, b. 1985
Lin YiHsuan, (b. Yilan, Taiwan 1985) has been living and working in South America for over a decade, an experience which informs both his identity and his practice. Since 2015, he has been based in São Paulo, Brazil, his adopted home. As an outsider, Lin’s mixed media paintings address the very concept of painting itself while serving as a diaristic notation of his experiences as an immigrant, visitor, traveler, and in part, a local. With one foot embedded in Paulistano culture, and another in his coastal hometown of Yilan, Lin’s paintings become a mixing of references from East and West, between abstraction and figuration, interpreting the subjective experience of his life with a mixing of street life graffiti, jazz lyricism, and certain classical Asian line forms. His recent work upends a relation with sky, sea and land, alluding to both an island orientation as well as the off-kilter perspective of a nomad translating his visual language into something hybrid.
Lin YiHsuan held two solo exhibitions, “Lin YiHsuan: Straw” and “Lin YiHsuan: a man called log” at Each Modern in 2018 and 2021. Other solo shows include “Sob o Céu Estrelado” at Ateliê Fidalga (as part of the 14a Bienal de Curitibe), São Paulo and “We are Turtles” at Kuandu Museum of Fine Art, Taipei in 2019. In 2019, Lin was a resident artist at ISCP, New York.
