Founded in 2004, A Kassen consists of Christian Bretton‑Meyer, Morten Steen Hebsgaard, Søren Petersen, and Tommy Petersen. The members met at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and are currently based in both Copenhagen and Berlin. A Kassen’s practice is rooted in a sharp sensitivity to both art history and contemporary materials. Through a balance of prediction and intervention, they develop a poetic and critical language in contemporary art. Spanning sculpture, photography, installation, and performance, their works often engage space and matter in seemingly absurd yet highly logical ways, interrogating the systems, forms, and values of art, architecture, and the environment.
A Kassen has exhibited extensively at museums across Europe—including in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France, Iceland, Spain, Italy, and Germany—and their works are held in the collections of institutions such as Malmø Kunstmuseum (Sweden), Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg (Denmark), Kistefos Museum (Norway), CA2M (Spain), and r/e Collection. They have also created permanent sculptures at the Danish Embassy in New Delhi and in cities such as Karlstad and Lund in Sweden. In 2025, they launched Jord, a shop project that involved excavating large amounts of soil in Stubbekøbing, Denmark, and selling it in small, labeled packets.
