Ding Hongdan China, b. 1995

Ding Hongdan, born in Guangzhou, China in 1995, Ding Hongdan received her BFA (2018) and MFA (2021) from the Third Studio of the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), where she is currently pursuing her doctoral degree. Ding’s work is rooted in realism and explores the complexities of contemporary female subjectivity, daily life, and social relationships. Her artistic practice reflects a broader understanding of “women’s studies” — not as a fixed methodology, but as an evolving attitude toward perception, representation, and identity.

Her visual narratives are layered with multiple threads and perspectives, evoking a fluidity characteristic of the digital era. With clarity and an unapologetic gaze, she constructs fragmented realities that mirror the disjointed, often opaque conditions of contemporary life — shaped by youth culture, internet discourse, and global politics. In her paintings, glamorous giants appear radiant and commanding, yet often surrounded by hidden secrets. These veiled elements are rendered through humor, irony, and cartoon-like metaphors, revealing both Ding’s creative freedom and the unspoken tensions of present-day China.

Ding Hongdan has held notable solo exhibitions including Afraid at Star Art Museum, Shanghai, and Still Mad at MAMOTH, London. In 2025, she will present a major solo exhibition at the West Coast Art Museum, Qingdao. Her recent group exhibitions include: Clouds in Pants, West Coast Art Museum, Qingdao (2024); The Weaver’s Maze, Lisson Gallery, Shanghai (2024); Structures of Our Own, Aki Gallery, Taipei (2024); TAG New Contemporary II: Offshore, West Coast Art Museum, Qingdao (2024); Layered Skins, Tang Contemporary Art, Hong Kong (2023); and the 2022 Wuhan Biennale at He Art Museum, Wuhan (2022).
